Spring Cleaning: Five Areas to Focus On
Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and one way to celebrate the changing of the seasons is with spring cleaning. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, there are plenty of areas that could benefit from some decluttering, cleaning, and freshening up.
In other words, it’s time to dust off the cobwebs (literally) and hit the reset button on our cozy living spaces. As we start to wake up from our proverbial winter slumber, let’s join in and put some pep in our home’s step. Here are five focal points for your spring-cleaning extravaganza this year (drum roll, please)!
1. Declutter Your Home
One of the biggest tasks during spring cleaning is decluttering. Over time, we tend to accumulate a lot of stuff that we no longer need or use. This can lead to a cluttered and chaotic home, which can cause stress and make it difficult to relax. To start decluttering your home, go through each room and create three piles: keep, donate, and throw away.
Be ruthless with your decisions and try to let go of items that you haven’t used in the past year or that no longer serve a purpose in your life. Once you’ve sorted through everything, make sure to dispose of the throwaway pile responsibly and drop off the donate pile at a local charity.
Here are some tips:
- Start small: Begin with one room or area at a time, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
- Get rid of duplicates: If you have multiple items that serve the same purpose, keep the one you use most and donate or sell the rest.
- Sort items into piles: Create piles for items you want to keep, donate, sell, or throw away.
- Donate or sell: Consider donating items in good condition to a local charity or selling them online.
- Organize what’s left: Once you’ve decluttered, organize what’s left so that everything has a place.

2. Deep Clean Your Kitchen
The kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in the house, and it’s also one of the most important to keep clean. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to give your kitchen a deep clean.
Start by cleaning out the fridge, freezer and pantry and get rid of any expired or spoiled food. Clear off all surfaces, including countertops, shelves, and drawers. Then, use a disinfectant spray or wipes to clean all surfaces.
Pay special attention to areas that tend to collect grease and grime, such as the stovetop, oven, and microwave. Finally, mop or sweep the floors, and your kitchen will be sparkling clean and ready for spring.
3. Freshen Up Your Bedroom
Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries, and they deserve a little extra attention during spring cleaning. Start by washing all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and comforters. While the bedding is in the wash, take the time to dust all surfaces, including nightstands, dressers, and shelves. Don’t forget to vacuum or sweep under the bed and in the corners of the room. Finally, add a little freshness to your bedroom by opening the windows and letting in some fresh air or adding a new plant or vase of fresh flowers.
4. Organize Your Closet
Another area that tends to accumulate clutter is our closets. Spring cleaning is a great time to organize your closet and get rid of any clothing items that no longer fit or that you haven’t worn in the past year. Start by pulling everything out of your closet and sorting it into piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Then, organize the keep pile by color, type, or season, depending on what works best for you. Consider investing in some closet organizers, such as hanging organizers or shoe racks, to maximize your space and keep everything tidy.
5. Clean Your Outdoor Spaces
Finally, don’t forget to clean your outdoor spaces during spring cleaning.
If you have a patio, deck, or balcony, start by clearing off any debris, such as leaves or branches, and giving it a good sweep or power wash.
Then, clean any outdoor furniture or decor, such as cushions or umbrellas. If you have a grill, give it a good scrub to remove any buildup from last season. Finally, add some fresh plants or flowers to your outdoor space to create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
Here are some other tips to help you clean your outdoor spaces:
- Prune bushes and trees: Trim back any overgrown bushes or trees to keep them looking neat and tidy.
- Power wash surfaces: Use a power washer to clean patios, decks, and outdoor furniture.
- Check for damage: Inspect outdoor furniture, fences, and other structures for damage and make arrangements for any necessary repairs.
