In a nutshell, the best way to keep your bathroom clean is to clean it regularly. Once you develop this habit, it’ll be much easier to maintain and take less time.
In short, the bathroom is my favorite room in the house to clean.
Why?
Good Hygiene. Clean bathrooms reduce the risk of bacteria, mold, germs, etc., and therefore, decrease exposure to illnesses. And, on top of that, the room where I clean myself, has got to be clean.
So, if your bathroom’s not where you’d like it to be, or, you don’t know where to start, keep reading. This certainly isn’t prescriptive – start wherever works best for you – just start.

I’ve learned that cleaning from top-to-bottom is the best method and one used by professional cleaners. This way, dust, and dirt accumulate on the floor, which is the last place you’ll clean.
Let’s get started.
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Spray all-purpose cleaner on the shower walls, outside and inside of the toilet, and let it sit to do its work.
- Light fixtures: Wipe down the light fixtures with a microfibre cloth, or, use an extendable microfibre duster.
- Mirrors: Spray the mirror with glass cleaner. Glass cleaner options are plentiful. So, specific glass cleaner such as Windex, your all-purpose cleaner, or, a homemade mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water (one cup each), are all effective. Clean with one side of the microfibre cloth and dry the mirror with the other side.
- Counter: Remove all items from the top of the counter; spray it with your all-purpose cleaner and wipe it down with a microfibre cloth, or, sponge. A small squeegee is also effective for removing any excess water that may accumulate on the counter while cleaning. Clean the items that were removed, before putting them back on the counter. As a matter of fact, I only keep essentials on the counter – toothbrush, toothbrush holder, toothpaste, soap, and lotion. Everything else is stored in totes in the cupboards below, and in organizers inside the drawers. This makes it easier to keep the counter and underneath it, clean and organized.
- Sink: Clean the sink with a mild abrasive cleaner such as Vim and the coarse side of a scrubbing sponge; wipe down the faucet with a microfibre cloth and disinfect the faucet afterward.
- Cupboards: Wipe down the cupboards, drawers, and handles with the microfibre cloth. Disinfect the handles afterward.
- Shower: Use the abrasive side of the sponge to clean the shower walls; clean the faucet and shower head with the non-abrasive side; for glass doors use the abrasive side of the sponge to clean and remove soap scum; rinse with water; dry with a microfibre cloth, or, use a squeegee to remove excess moisture; if you have shower curtains spray with your all-purpose cleaner, wipe with a microfibre cloth and rinse with water. Apply Vim to the shower floor and scrub with the plastic scrubber. Rinse with water.
- Bathtub: Use the mild abrasive cleaner and clean with a sponge. A long- handled cleaner works well for those with back and knee issues, as it minimizes bending and kneeling. Disinfect the faucet, afterward.
- Toilet: See Have a Clean Toilet by Following These Steps
- Floors: Sweep first and use a mop, or, wet Swiffer afterward.
Extras:
- Change your towels every 2 – 3 days
- Wash your floor mat every week
- Use a diffuser to add a nice scent
Every Few Months:
- Wash the walls
- Wipe down the baseboards
- Clean out the bathroom ceiling vent and floor vents
Overall, the best way to keep your bathroom clean is to do it regularly and stay on top of it. Germs, mold, and bacteria love bathrooms because they’re damp. So, a routine clean will help to keep them at bay. And, given the times we’re living in, this is especially important.
Interestingly enough, you’d be surprised what a clean, fresh-smelling bathroom can do for your mood. Give it a try – see what happens.
