The focus of this post is 5 cleaning tips for busy lives.

Yes, the chores seem unending and you’re feeling overwhelmed.  I get it.

And, once you feel overwhelmed, it can be challenging to zero in on what you need to get done and to do it efficiently.

No doubt, life is busy.  And, taking care of your home in the midst of being busy, can be taxing. So, if you’re at this point, it’s time to reconsider your current cleaning habits and replace them with ones that are easier to maintain.

What are these 5 cleaning tips for busy lives that you can use to reduce the overwhelm, and make a difference in your home?

  1. Cleaning frequently
  2. Putting things away
  3. Having readily available cleaning supplies
  4. Using an automated vacuum cleaner
  5. Getting help from family, or, professionals

Time to delve into these tips in more detail.

Cleaning Tip #1: Clean frequently

Do you often find yourself seeing a mess and thinking, “I’ll clean that up later”?

If this sounds familiar, adjusting your cleaning frequency will help you.

Instead of cleaning once per week, for 3-hour sessions, increase the frequency.  Clean in shorter spurts, more often.

Dust for 15 minutes every few days. Sweep your kitchen floor every day.  Pick up whatever’s on the floor. Do a quick wipe-down of your tables and counters.  All of this will keep your home fresh and presentable, without too much effort.

Here’s the thing. When you clean more frequently, the quality of your cleaning improves.  Motivational speaker and author Jim Rohn stated that “success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day”.

And, practicing these disciplines leaves you with a clean home that will require deep cleaning less often, than usual.

Cleaning Tip #: Put things where they belong

Having a place for everything is an important strategy to avoid the build-up of clutter.  Unquestionably, it’s more difficult to clean a cluttered space than a clear space.

In essence, everything in your home needs a home.  This gives your place a sense of order.

Also, if you don’t put things away where they belong, it can be difficult to find something in a crunch.

And, when you’re busy, the last thing you want to do is to expend energy looking for misplaced items. Who’s got time for that?

It’s a good thing that there’s so much available to keep you organized. Whether it be shelving, drawer organizers, various storage containers, closet organizers, the list is quite possibly, endless.

Challenge yourself to put things where they belong, as steps towards developing and maintaining a clutter-free mindset.

Cleaning Tip #3: Have cleaning supplies readily available

One of the worst reasons for not accomplishing your cleaning goals? Not having the right equipment on-hand.

Make sure you are well-stocked for any mishap that may come up. So, you can break out the tools of the trade, to get the job done.

Organizing your cleaning supplies in a caddy is efficient and practical.   And, ensures that what you need is readily accessible.

Another option for readily available cleaning products is to use natural ingredients and solutions when you clean. Ingredients such as baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar can be used for a variety of cleaning needs. These easy-to-make solutions can be whipped up very quickly, and since it’s likely that you already have these items in your kitchen, this also helps you save effort and money.

Cleaning Tip #4: Use an automated vacuum cleaner

Automated vacuums are becoming increasingly popular.

These user-friendly “robot vacuums” work well for heavily trafficked areas in your home, such as entryways.  And, they work on any floor surface, whether carpeted, tiled, or wood.

They form internal maps of the rooms in your home due to sensors that help them to navigate their way around your living space.  The built-in sensors also detect walls, stairs, ledges, and furniture, changing direction when encountering these objects.

Automated vacuums require minimal monitoring. This is great when you’re busy, as you can focus your efforts elsewhere, while your floors are being vacuumed.

Who knows what this ever-advancing technology could mean for the future of cleaning?

Cleaning Tip #5: Get help from family members or professionals

The task of cleaning a home does not have to be the responsibility of one person. It’s important for everyone in the home to lend a helping hand when it comes to cleaning up.

It’s certainly nice when your household is invested in keeping your home clean and comfortable to live in. This is a lesson that you might have to teach your children – and maybe even some adults!

If your household doesn’t rotate chores among each other, now is a good time to do so.

How do you do this?

Ideally, one way is to make tangible reminders that it’s Person A’s task to this today, and Person B’s task to complete it next week. A family calendar on the fridge, for example, can help remind people of their responsibilities and accountabilities.

The best part about the schedule is that it’s clear.  So, there’s less room for interpretation and you can be direct about clearing up any disputes.

Now, if your family is unavailable, or, unwilling to assist, consider a cleaning service every once in a while, or, on a fixed schedule. While this may not be something you’re used to, you could consider it as a way of trading in money for some more time.
